I am a journalist who lives by the word. The word is air that suggests matter that are symbols that provoke emotions.

I am a journalist who also uses the written word, that is, the air turned into the tangible matter that causes us emotions. Without air, there is no life. The word is life.

In fact, in our Judeo-Christian culture, the word generates life or the order of life or ordered life. And when the god of our culture felt angry or threatened by the disorder… that god materialized the word on Tablet, in Stone Tablets, in tables of the law, in written language, in the tangible matter. And today, several millennia later, without the tangible matter that comes from the air of words, life is another.

Today technology allows us to enter, without breaking it, in the envelope of clay that keeps messages in cuneiform writing. We can visualize messages from four thousand years ago. And we can print those messages in 3-D and get a human being to do what he/she does best: connect with the objects -in this case, the words and their medium.

Writing is the technology of language, it is the medium that is the message. Supposedly it was born on the mud between two rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, to keep information about the economy, about the offerings to the gods. And the written language was also to create norms, to tell myths that explain us as humans, to explain reality, to ask the powerful for accountability, to be journalists…

A journalist writes to create a record of reality as a Sumerian scribe who points out the harvest data.

Today the journalist who writes in Spanish in the United States is inscribing the features of the new Spanish-American language on cellulose and digital platforms. The journalist who digs words in Spanish in a story is helping to create the Spanish language of the United States.

It is the Spanish language of a non-geographical cultural frontier, brilliantly crossed by the ways of the Spanish-American and the Anglo-Saxon and the Germanic.

Today the magic of written Spanish sends a message to oral Spanish and vice versa. If guacheo, I look, and if lokeo, I lock. And yet, the writing that narrates our American life knows how to overcome the crossfire of the barrio to deliver the message on a digital or clay tablet and thus maintain the eternal duality of those who read matter and feel the air.
